Egy londoni kispolgár lakásában különös dologra ébrednek: a fürdőkádban egy teljesen meztelen holttest fekszik, orrán aranykeretes cvikkerrel. Az illető kilétét homály fedi, ám a nyomozásba hamar bekapcsolódik a detektívvé avanzsált Lord Peter Wimsey, aki elhatározza, hogy a kezébe veszi a rejtélyes ügyet.


A rendőrség azt feltételezi, hogy a holttest az előző este eltűnt bankáré, Sir Reuben Levyé lehet. A londoni pénzember ügyében szerencsére Lord Peter barátja nyomoz, így Wimsey csatlakozik hozzá, és arra a következtetésre jutnak, hogy a két eset valószínűleg nem függ össze egymással. De akkor vajon ki lehetett a kádban talált ismeretlen, és mi történhetett egy jómódú, köztiszteletnek örvendő bankárral, akinek, úgy tudni, nem voltak ellenségei?
