A holokauszt-túlélő Edek (Fry) negyvenöt éve Amerikában él és esze ágában sincs visszalátogatni gyerekkora helyszínére, Lengyelországba. Lánya, Ruth (Dunham) a rendszerváltás után viszont rábírja apját, hogy együtt szembenézzenek a családi múlttal. Ruth titkos célja, hogy eljussanak Auschwitzba és megértse Edek érzelmi zárkózottságát. Az egész országot átszelő utazás lehetőséget biztosít a párosnak, hogy közelebb kerüljenek egymáshoz.
