A koronavírus-járvány súlyos gazdasági következményeként meredeken, az előző évhez képest 84,1 százalékkal csökkent a Ciprusra látogató turisták száma tavaly.

    A ciprusi statisztikai hivatal adatai szerint több mint 631 ezer turista járt a Földközi-tenger keleti medencéjében fekvő országban, szemben a 2019-ben mért több mint 3,9 millióval. Decemberben mindössze 9682 turista érkezett a szigetországba, ami 91,2 százalékkal kevesebb az egy évvel korábbinál.
    A ciprusi hatóságok márciusban rendelték el az ország határainak lezárását a külföldi turisták előtt. A beutazási tilalom június 8-ig volt hatályban, utána fokozatosan, a járványügyi kockázatok figyelembe vételével lazították az előírásokat.
    Ciprus hazai össztermékéhez (GDP) általában mintegy 15 százalékkal járul hozzá az idegenforgalom. Tavaly az előző negyedévhez képest január-márciusban 0,9 százalékkal, április-júniusban pedig 13,1 százalékkal csökkent a GDP nominális értéken, míg a július-szeptemberben 9,4 százalékkal emelkedett. Éves összevetésben az első negyedévben 1,5 százalékos növekedést, míg a másodikban 12,3 százalékos, a harmadikban pedig 4,4 százalékos csökkenést mértek.
    A több mint 800 ezer lakost számláló Cipruson a járvány kirobbanása óta több mint 29 ezren fertőződtek meg a SARS-CoV-2 vírussal, a halottak száma pedig 175-re rúg.
