Marianne Fillenz, az idegrendszer kutatója Temesváron született magyar zsidó apától és osztrák katolikus anyától. Román iskolába járt, szüleivel németül beszéltek, magyarul a cselédlányoktól tanult. 1939-ben a család Új-Zélandra emigrált. Marianne 1950-ben visszatért az Óvilágba: Oxfordban befejezte doktori képzését, férjhez ment és gyermekei születtek. Az emlékirat addig a pontig vezeti az olvasót, ahol a fiatal lány megkezdi saját életét és pályáját.

A memoár mellett a szerző levelezése a világhírű filozófussal, Karl R. Popperrel egy több mint ötvenéves barátság lenyomata. Popper eleinte a tehetséges diáknak kijáró udvarias leveleket ír, később Marianne családját, barátait is megismeri; inti, hogy válassza a kutatást: a hidegháborús fenyegetettségben úgy tűnt, hamarosan szükség lehet rá „Új-Zéland biológiai védekezésében”.
