Hidetora fejedelem átadja birodalmának irányítását legidősebb fiának, Tarónak. Szaburu, a legkisebb fiú nem helyesli apja döntését, mert mindkét bátyját túlságosan hatalomszeretőnek ismeri, s emiatt egyiküket sem érzi alkalmasnak egy egységes állam vezetésére. Az atya ezért Szaburu ellen fordul, de hamarosan kénytelen lesz belátni, hogy „lázadó fiának” igaza volt… A filmben Kuroszava Akira Shakespeare Lear király című művét meséli el, a történetet a XVI. századi Japánba helyezve át. Szándéka szerint létfontosságú kérdésekre kíván bennünket figyelmeztetni, ahogy a Filmkultúra kritikusa is írta: „Kuroszava, a gondolkodó és művészetével hatni tudó, felelős ember a lehető legaktuálisabb veszélyre hívja fel a figyelmet: az emberiség bármelyik pillanatban elpusztíthatja önmagát.
