Egy életen át írtam novellákat. Elméletem szerint a novella nem azonos az elbeszéléssel. Az elbeszélés olyan történet, amelyet a havilapokban adunk közre, terjedelme tizenötezer karakternél több, néha húsz- vagy akár harmincezer. Elég hosszú tehát. A novella viszont az, ami befér a hetilap egy teljes oldalára, tehát régi számolással kábé tíz flekk (ennyi nagy sorközzel telegépelt oldal). Ami ennél is rövidebb, az mi? A két háború közt tárcának hívták, ám az inkább egyfajta személyes újságcikk. Lehet-e novellát – történetet – írni még sokkal tömörebben, ha tetszik, töményebben? Kihívás. Én megpróbáltam, először szerkesztői kérésre, aztán már sportból, „odaülök, rövidülök” jeligére.
A kötetben olyan vallomások találhatóak, amelyeket kicsit – vagy nagyon – szégyell az ember, s nem szívesen mesél el, még baráti vagy családi körben sem. (A fotóm is efféle.) Erőt kellett vennem magamon… értik. Erre utal a cím: töredelmes vallomás.
