Anton Pavlovics Csehov első előadott drámája az Ivanov, melynek legelső változatát 1887-ben mutatták be Moszkvában. Az Ivanov egyedülálló Csehov drámái között annyiban, hogy nem sok egyenrangú, hanem egy abszolút főszereplő áll a színmű középpontjában, az ő tétovasága azonban környezetére is kihat.

„Az, hogy Csehov drámái máig sikerrel játszhatók, arra vall, hogy a régi világ ugyan összeomlott, de a cárizmus ilyen-olyan rendszerek becenevén újjáéledt, és a mai napig kitartóan korhad; tétova, céltalan emberek vegetálnak tömegesen, a helyüket nem találva; hosszúra nyúlik az egykor átmenetinek vélt történelmi pillanat”, írja utószavában Spiró György, aki először 1995-ben fordította le az Ivanovot, ám a mostani szövegkiadás sok javítást is tartalmaz.
