A könyörtelen sivatagi nap alatt…
Egy reggel Jack Reacher épp nyugat felé gyalogol a ki­halt autóúton, amikor egy különös jelenet tárul a szeme elé. Egy régi katonai dzsip ütközött egy fának. Az egyetlen fának, amerre a szem ellát. A kormánykerékre dőlve egy nő fekszik.
…semmi sem az, aminek látszik.
Kisvártatva kiderül, hogy a nő az ikertestvérét keresi, akit feltételezhetően veszélyes emberek hálóztak be. A vezetőjük a rejtélyes Dendoncker, akinek komoly befolyása van a közeli, határ menti kisvárosban. A férfi a háttérbe húzódva irányítja a szervezetet, és a leghűségesebb em­berein kívül senki sem tudja, hogy néz ki, és miként le­het megtalálni. Reacher azonban igen nagy gyakorlattal rendelkezik abban, hogy rábukkanjon azokra, akik ezt a legkevésbé sem szeretnék…
