Georges Dupint, a zsémbes, párizsi születésű, koffeinfüggő felügyelőt egy reggel a croissant-ja és a kávéja mellől rángatják el egy furcsa gyilkossághoz. Az áldozat a kilencvenegy éves szállodatulajdonos, Pierre-Louis Pennec, akit az étterme padlóján találnak vérbe fagyva.
