Mordecai Tremaine nyugdíjas rendőrnyomozó arra készül, hogy a dúsgazdag arisztokrata, Benedict Grame idilli udvarházának előkelő vendégseregletével töltse a szentestét. Az álmos kisváros és a ház is többarasznyi hó alatt várja a karácsonyt. Amikor a vendégsereg elkölti az ünnepi vacsorát, a csillogó karácsonyfadíszek már a fán lógnak.
Éjfélkor azonban a vendégek nem csupán a névre szóló ajándékokat találják a fa alatt – hanem egy holttestet is. Az áldozat pedig igencsak hasonlít a Mikulásra… A gyanú árnyéka immár mindenkire rávetül, és Mordecainak kell megakadályoznia, hogy más is halálát lelje a szeretet ünnepén.
