Kim Stone felügyelőt egy este vérfagyasztó tetthely fogadja: egy idős nőt szögesdróttal egy hintához kötöztek, és a tarkójára egy X-et véstek. Az áldozat a gyermekpszichológia nyugalmazott professzora volt.
Hamarosan két újabb holttestet találnak, amelyeken ugyanaz a jellegzetes szimbólum látható, Kim pedig ráébred: egy sorozatgyilkosra vadászik.
