Berlin, 1933. A Reichstag lángokban áll. A rendőrség azonnali mozgósítást rendel el. Rath felügyelőnek is meg kell szakítania a szabadságát, a legnagyobb meglepetésére azonban nem a tűzeset kivizsgálását kapja feladatul. Egy hajléktalan veterán meggyilkolásának az ügyével bízzák meg, akit egy első világháborús tőrrel szúrtak le – megdöbbentő brutalitással. Rövid időn belül több leszerelt katonával is ugyanilyen módon végeznek, így a nyomozó számára egyértelművé válik, hogy egy sorozatgyilkossal áll szemben. Ám nemcsak egy elvetemült bűnözőt üldöz: az egyre szélsőségesebbé váló közhangulatban a rendőrség politikai vezetése és a berlini alvilág erői között is egyensúlyoznia kell. Az óra azonban ketyeg, és Rathnak meg a tettest, mielőtt az lecsapna a következő áldozatára.
