Adorno egyik legismertebb munkája, egyszersmind méltó párja a szerző zenefilozófiai főművének, Az új zene filozófiájának. Az először 1960-ban megjelent könyv jelentőségét két perspektívában lehet fölmérni: az adornói életművön belül, illetve a Mahler-recepcióhoz való hozzájáruláson keresztül.
Adorno már az 1920-as évek közepén, Alban Berg Wozzeck című operájának értelmezése kapcsán megpróbált kidolgozni egy olyan általános elméletet, amely egy mű (méghozzá egyetlen mű) közvetlen közelében marad. Másrészt még a hatvanas években is meg-megjelentek olyan elemzései, amelyek konkrét életművekkel foglalkoznak. Ennek kiemelkedő példája a Mahler-monográfia. A kutatás egyre inkább hajlik arra, hogy ebben a könyvben lássa Adorno zenefilozófiai működésének csúcspontját.
