A Cévennek hegyeinek védelmező karéjában születik egy gyerek. Egy fekete szemű, hosszú szempillájú, kerek arcú kisfiú, aki nem lát, és aki egy idegrendszeri rendellenesség miatt voltaképp örökre csecsemő marad. Egy „szabálytalan” gyerek, aki láthatatlan határt húz a családja és a többi ember közé. Ez az ő története. Az övé és a testvéreié. A legidősebbé, aki szinte eggyé válik vele, óvón ragaszkodik hozzá, átadja magát neki, és elveszik benne. A középsőé, akiben izzik a harag, és aki teljesen elutasítja a gyereket, ám amikor szükség van rá, mindent megtesz, hogy megmentse az összeomlás szélén lévő családját. És a legfiatalabbé, aki a család szellemeinek árnyékában él, mégis az újjászületést és a megbékélést hordozza.
