Az oda vezető út azonban nem könnyű: a világ minden tájáról érkező bevándorlók szembekerülnek a lakosság nagyobb részét jelentő arabok mellett a brit hadsereggel és közigazgatással is, miközben ők maguk ezernyi eszme hívei. Terrorakciók és ellenakciók, bosszú és áldozatvállalás, indulatok és érvek – rengeteg ellentmondás feszíti a harkovi orosz telepes, Avraham Bogatir napjait, aki családjával évtizedek óta küszködik darabka földjén a megélhetésért. A forró 1947-es év palesztinai eseményein keresztül az író tűpontosan érzékelteti azt az időszakot, amelyben Izrael Állam megszületett, és sejteti az ország máig ható, jövendő útját is.
