Mila Vasqueznél kevesen tudják jobban, mit is jelent eltűnni. A Szövetségi Rendőrség eltűnt személyekkel foglalkozó osztályán ugyanis nap mint nap farkasszemet néz ama több száz emberrel, akiknek nyomuk veszett. Valahányszor belép az irodába, az ő tekintetük mered rá a falakat borító fényképrengetegről. Azoknak a tekintete, akiket elnyelt a sötétség. Akik mindent hátrahagytak.
És akik most visszatérnek… Sok-sok év után, kíméletlenül és pusztítón, megannyi áldozatot követelve. Noha hasonlítanak egykori önmagukra, a lelkük már valaki másé. De ki állhat a rejtélyes eltűnésük mögött? Hol voltak ez idáig? És vajon miért jönnek vissza?
Mila számára hamar világossá válik: ahhoz, hogy megállítsa az „árnyak seregét”, a sötétségnek alakot kell öltenie, és rá hárul a feladat, hogy magyarázatot találjon a gonosz természetére. És arra, hogy mindezt igazolni is tudja, egyetlen megoldás kínálkozik: önmagát is át kell adnia a sötétségnek.
