A 2019-ben újra sajtó alá rendezett Magyar irodalomtörténet után most A világirodalom története is megújult formában lát napvilágot. Az először 1941-ben megjelent művet nem kímélte a politikai cenzúra: a Rákosi-korszak kiadásaiban a Mai orosz irodalom fejezetet a sztálini Szovjetunió eredményei iránti lelkesedés jegyében teljesen újraírták, de a későbbi kiadások is eszközöltek kisebb-nagyobb változtatásokat a szövegen. A napjainkban is friss és izgalmas világirodalmi kalauz új kiadása az eredeti, még Szerb Antal életében megjelent szövegváltozat alapján készült.
