Sábán költő szeretne lenni, ám ahhoz még sokat kell tanulnia, meg kell ismernie a világot és önmagát. Csakhogy a szultán megbízásából Budára küldött Bali bég nem nézi jó szemmel a fia törekvéseit. Ő annak örülne, ha Sábán hozzá hasonlóan gyakorlatias dolgokkal foglalkozna.


A vízivárosi cigányok vajdája elzavarja palotájukból a lányát, Linát, mert azt rebesgetik, hogy boszorkány, és köze lehet a nemrégiben történt tragikus eseményekhez. A két fiatal sorsa a Budától délre eső, Duna-parti hegyen fonódik össze, amikor a várost az ostromlók ágyúzni kezdik. A keresztény hadak ismét megpróbálkoznak Buda visszafoglalásával, ám a legnagyobb bajt nem a dörgő fegyverek jelentik, hanem azok a furcsa halálesetek, amelyeket nem emberi kéz okozott…
