Amikor Poszeidón megbecsteleníti őt Athéné templomában, az istennő égtelen haragra gerjed a szentély megsértése miatt, és a fiatal nőn áll bosszút a tengeristen tettéért. Medusza hajkoronáját tekergő kígyók váltják fel, és egyetlen pillantása bármely élőlényt kővé változtat, ezért magányra és önkéntes vakságra kárhoztatja magát.
