Robert Huntert, a Los Angeles-i rendőrség gyilkossági osztályának nyomozóját egy ismeretlen telefonáló arra utasítja, hogy látogasson el egy honlapra, amely élőben közvetíti egy üvegtartályba zárt, megkötözött férfi utolsó perceit. A hívó azonban nem elégszik meg azzal, hogy Hunter a tanúja legyen a szerencsétlen haláltusájának: azt akarja, hogy részt vegyen az áldozat kivégzésében. A nyomozónak kell eldöntenie, hogyan érjen véget a férfi élete. Hunternek nincs más választása, mint hogy tehetetlenül végignézi a gyilkosságot, a rendőrség ugyanis az FBI-jal karöltve hiába próbálja meg lenyomozni az adást vagy a telefonáló tartózkodási helyét. A gyilkos igazi informatikus zseninek bizonyul, aki minden lehetséges nyomot eltüntet maga után, így Hunter és a társa, Garcia nyomozó számára óriási fejtörést jelent, hogyan kezdjenek neki a tettes kézre kerítésének. A telefon azonban hamarosan újra megszólal. Ugyanaz a hang, de egy másik honlap és egy másik áldozat. Ráadásul a gyilkos ezúttal változtat a játékszabályokon: egyfajta morbid valóságshow-t talál ki, amelyben a weboldal minden látogatója szavazhat az áldozat sorsáról…
